I just saw something that suggested that Emma Watson might play Johanna in Catching Fire. Other than the fact that I think she’s really too small to play a woman who’s handy with a throwing ax, am I alone in wanting to keep my HP out of my HG (same goes for Pattinson as Finnick. I mean there are other reasons I don’t want Pattinson as Finnick (please see his American accent and his face)), but him being another iconic YA character is certainly one of them.
I mean, it would be distracting right?
not really.. i mean i don’t wanna discriminate actors just because they were also in certain popular movies.. however, i don’t want robert as finnick, because finnick has to be good looking and robert is decent.. Emma is okay for johanna, i think. Johanna seems like a tough bitch, and i think Emma can pull that. I don’t care that she’s from HP. She’s an actress.
I don’t think we should discriminate actors simply because they’re from other popular movies, you feel me? like when that muscular guy from Twilight auditioned in THG.. they said no because he’s from Twilight.. i thought that was kind of strange. I mean who cares where he worked at, as long as he can play the new part right?
It’s a fair point - for me, the only issue is always the distraction issue, which is the reason (I imagine) studios care. They want to make sure that A) the audience will believe the person in this other role and (again, I’m guessing) don’t want to constantly remind them of a different studio’s blockbuster property as they’re supposed to be getting lost in their blockbuster property.
Which, I admit, I don’t always do. When I watch Indiana Jones, for instant, I don’t sit and think “Oh, hey, look at Han Solo being afraid of snakes,” but it does happen for me all the time. I mean, I couldn’t watch Sherlock for a really long time because every time I looked at Benedict Cumberbatches’ face I was immediately skeezed out (thanks to Atonement). But there are actors I still can’t disassociate from certain characters and I always find their performances off or silly because my brain is reading the roles intertextually.
Which, as you say, is definitely unfair to the actor, but doesn’t necessarily contradict the question of whether or not they would be distracting (it doesn’t help that the source material isn’t too far removed from either of those properties, being a YA adaptation).
I’m not saying they couldn’t do it (although, again, R. Pats’ face/accent remains a problem unless they make Finnick British, which would be wrong…right?) and it really does depend on the quality of their performance (I’ve never seen Emma Watson in anything else so I’m not quite sure of her acting chops).
But, what I always go back to is: I probably would not have cast Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and he worked out alright. So, who knows? Anything could work.
I agree. Like in the beginning, people were pissed that Jennifer was Katniss and Josh is Peeta.. but when the movie came out, they weren’t disappointed. However, when I saw Twilight…
I was a bit disappointed. No, sorry, scratch disappointed hahaha i was very unhappy. Except for Emmett and Alice. They were perfect. And I agree with Robert being Finnick.. I don’t see it also. I don’t think he’s that good-looking. hahaha he’s cute but Finnick has to be gorgeous, right?
Idk.. we’ll see who they decided to cast Johanna and Finnick. Emma was just a rumour… i don’t think she even knows about it. haha
